Note on God, hold my hand

From the Composer

This was the first piece of the Psalter I set to music (because it is psalm #1 in the collection “Psalms by Men,” where the psalms were first collected). I thought: “Psalms by men; what’s better to give voice to men’s prayers than a male soloist and a men’s chorus?” Since this is a psalm, the soloist functions as Cantor, singing a line that is repeated by the chorus. People have commented that there’s a little Barbershop/South African flavor to the piece. I’m delighted with any similarity, although, particularly in the last half of the work, I was aiming more at a South African texture.
