Father and Son

The Psalm

Father and Son
I am a part of you, Dad,
And you are Godlike

You were like a ship, traveling far
But always returning to home port
You were distant, but with a purpose,
As fathers in your day were

I knew you were in my corner,
My ally, confidant and counselor

Only later, when I became a man,
did you become my best friend;
It was wonderful—both at our primes,
me starting out, and you winding down.

I became a father and you became…older.
The cycle of life—I get it.

But it can be cruel and confusing.

God, help me make the most of this time:
To accept and not be angry;
To adapt and not retreat;
To unconditionally love and support;

As my Dad did for me.
